Lenten Observances

Norms for Fasting and Abstaining from Meat

Fasting

In the dioceses in the United States, Catholics aged 18 through 59 are bound to fast on both Ash Wednesday (February 14) and Good Friday (March 29). To fast means to consume one full meal a day at most, although taking of other, smaller quantities of food at the other customary mealtimes is permitted. Food and drink between meals (excepting water and medicine) is not permitted on fast days.

Abstinence from Meat

Catholics aged 14 and up are to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, all Fridays of Lent, and Good Friday. To abstain means refraining from eating beef, veal, pork or poultry at least, although eggs and milk products are acceptable. The consumption of fish and shellfish is permitted, though the penitential character of the abstinence should be kept in mind.

Excused from Fasting and Abstinence from Meat

Those who are excused from fast and abstinence outside the age limits include the physically or mentally ill including individuals suffering from chronic illnesses such as diabetes. Also excluded are pregnant or nursing women. In all cases, common sense should prevail, and ill persons should not further jeopardize their health by fasting.

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament,
the Scriptural Way of the Cross with Taize Music,
and Benediction
Fridays of Lent from February 16 through March 22,  come rest in silence with the Lord exposed on the altar from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Beginning at 7 p.m. we will pray the Scriptural Way of the Cross devotion. This unique approach to the Way of the Cross is based on the stations written by St. John Paul II which incorporates Taizé music as well as other refrains sung in a Taizé style. These evenings conclude with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.

NOTE:  On March 22, Benediction will be at 6:45 p.m. and the Living Stations of the Cross presented by our Youth Ministry, will begin at 7 p.m.
